The Power of Fresh Starts: Why You Need to Stop Panicking (And Start Planning)
The Power of Fresh Starts: Why You Need to Stop Panicking (And Start Planning)
By Evelyn Chen
What a week it has been.
All our schools reopened and between managing schedules, coordinating logistics and channelling the energy of fresh starts, I have been running on pure adrenaline and coffee.
But here’s the thing: I am not panicking.
Twenty years ago? I would have been a mess. But after nearly three decades in the workforce, I have traded my youthful panic for something far more powerful: a system.
Here’s what experience has taught me: problems are like laundry. Even when you finish one load, there’s another pile waiting.
The difference between my younger self and me now? I have stopped treating every problem like an emergency. I have learnt that problems don’t disappear just because you are stressed about them. They WILL still be there after you have tackled the most urgent tasks.
Staying calm isn’t just about keeping your cool, it’s strategic. It gives you the clarity to handle whatever life throws at you with a level head instead of flailing around in panic mode.
I look back at my younger self and just want to give that girl a hug (and a nap).
Back then, my to-do list was my religion. I was constantly reading, researching, trying to solve things way above my pay grade because I was terrified of my bosses. I lived in fear of being yelled at, of making mistakes, of looking incompetent.
It was during those moments of “junior-level trauma” that I made myself a promise: When I’m the boss, I will treat my team with the respect and patience I once craved; not with a megaphone.
We prepared for this reopening week like we were heading into battle. There was endless cleaning, maintenance, staff meetings to align goals and calendars. We planned meticulously.
And you know what? Issues still popped up.
Because here’s the truth: no matter how well you plan, life happens. Things beyond your control will arise. Equipment breaks. People get sick. Traffic jams happen. The printer runs out of ink at the worst possible moment.
But that’s exactly why planning matters, not to prevent all problems, but to handle them without losing your mind.
I know parents are feeling it too.
First, you need a holiday to recover from your holiday. Then suddenly, the school gates open, the New Year hits and boom, the serious work begins. Homework. Packed lunches. Early mornings. Extracurricular schedules. It’s a lot.
But don’t worry. We have done this dance before. Right after Chinese New Year, we will all magically transform back into well-oiled machines, functioning on autopilot just like every other year.
So what’s my secret? How do I handle chaos without losing it?
Systems over stress.
Benjamin Franklin said it best: “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.”
So I plan. And then I plan some more. Not because I am a control freak (ok, maybe a little), but because having a system means I don’t have to reinvent the wheel every time something goes wrong.
When you have systems in place:
- You know who handles what
- You have backup plans
- You don’t waste energy panicking about predictable problems
- You can focus on the things that actually need your attention
Here’s my advice for surviving busy seasons:
- Stop trying to solve everything at once. The problems aren’t going anywhere. Tackle the urgent ones first. The rest can wait.
- Trust your systems. If you’ve done this before, you already know what works. Don’t second-guess yourself every five minutes.
- Steal moments of rest. Between tasks, between meetings, between the chaos, breathe. Rest isn’t a luxury; it’s survival.
- Remember: you’re not alone. We are all in the same boat, paddling through the same chaotic waters. If nothing else, find comfort in knowing many of us are “suffering” right along with you. Lol.
Experience is a gift. It teaches you that panic doesn’t solve problems, planning does. Calm thinking does. Systems do.
So, this weekend, get some actual sleep. Eat that expensive cempedak CAKE! Take a breath (or a few) and trust that you have built something that works. Don’t doubt, doubt kills!
And on Monday? Show up, stick to your plan and handle whatever comes your way with the confidence that you have survived worse.
You’ve got this.
We’ve got this.
Trust me on this one. 😊xx
