Level Up Your Vocabulary: Merdeka Edition!
Level Up Your Vocabulary: Merdeka Edition!
Every August 31, Malaysia doesn’t just celebrate independence, we embrace the spirit that makes us who we are. This year, why not add some fresh, “wow” words to your Merdeka mood? They’re perfect for Instagram captions, conversations, or even to show off your flair for English!
Here are some words worth stealing for your vocabulary list this eventful season:
🇲🇾 Patriotism
More than just waving the flag, patriotism means showing love and loyalty to your country. Try: “The stadium was overflowing with patriotism during the parade,” or “A wave of patriotism washed over me as we sang the anthems of pride.”
🇲🇾 Diversity
Malaysia = roti canai + dim sum + banana leaf. Enough said. Use diversity when you want to highlight variety, or differences, whether in culture, food, or even Netflix choices. After all, diversity is what makes our beloved Malaysia what it is.
🇲🇾 Resilience
A power word! It means the ability to bounce back after challenges. “From traffic jams to thunderstorms, Malaysians show resilience daily.”
🇲🇾 Liberation
A slightly fancier cousin of “freedom.” Think of the joy people felt on August 31, 1957… That was pure liberation.
🇲🇾 Heritage
Your grandmother’s kuih recipe? That’s heritage. The colours, dances, and traditions that survive through generations also define heritage. “This Merdeka, I’m reconnecting with my cultural heritage.”
🇲🇾 Gratitude
Simple but powerful. Merdeka reminds us to feel thankful. For the peace, the teh tarik, or the friends who ‘tapau’ food for us.
🇲🇾 Solidarity
Aha! This is unity with a bit more punch! It’s when people stand together in support of each other. Perfect word for Merdeka spirit! Example, “Remember the COVID-19 era? All of us stood in solidarity throughout the ordeal. Through the sickness, the lockdown, and finally, the light at the end of the tunnel.”
🇲🇾 Vibrant
Colourful, full of energy, and alive. Use it when describing parades, fireworks, or even your Merdeka outfit. “The city is vibrant with Jalur Gemilang everywhere!”, or “Your outfit’s looking so vibrant today!
🇲🇾 Commemorate
A grown-up way of saying “remember and honour.” Instead of “We celebrate Merdeka,” try “We commemorate the struggles that brought us Merdeka.”
🇲🇾 Harmony
When different voices, cultures, and people come together without clashing, that’s harmony. Malaysia wouldn’t be Malaysia without it.
So, this Merdeka, don’t just shout “Merdeka!”—utilise one of these words in your posts or conversations. Who knows? You might just inspire your friends to upgrade their vocabulary, too.
Happy Merdeka, Malaysia! 🇲🇾
