A REVIEW OF HARRY POTTER
BY YIP EN LIN, LOWER CPE
Harry Potter is a series of seven fantasy novels written by British author, J.K Rowling. It is about the lives of a young wizard, Harry Potter and his friends, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley. Three of them are the students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
I highly recommend this series as it appeals to both male and female readers. If you read Harry Potter, you can learn to be brave and always stick to what you believe is right. Just like Harry, even though he might die, he never strays from what he believes is true and right. He also stands up for himself and his friends.
The Harry Potter series is suitable for everyone as it contains some of the best quotes. For example, “It does do not to dwell on dreams and forget to live” which is said by Dumbledore. Hermione, Ginny, Mrs. Weasley and Professor McGonagall are the strong female characters in the books. Girls should consider them as a fantastic role models and learn their characteristics.
Harry Potter is one of the best fictional stories and it benefits the readers a lot. It is great series to read and you will learn a lot from it.
A REVIEW OF THE HOBBIT
BY LEE WEI YIN, LOWER CPE
This is a book that has made quite an impression within the reading world. Most readers would have come across this particular book one way or another. This fabulous book is ‘The Hobbit’ by J. R. R Tolkien, also the prequel of his famous novel series The Lord of the Rings. It has been translated into over 50 languages, sold over 100 million copies worldwide and has even had a movie series based on it. Known as a classic in literature, it is extremely popular among all age groups and different generations.
To be honest, what I think made this book such a success was its capability to appeal to all age groups. With a genre of high fantasy, it has elements that suit young children (whom this book really was meant for) but also some hidden connotations that only adults would be able to spot and delve deeply into. Not to mention that J.R.R. Tolkien had written this book with real meaning and feelings in it. As he is a professor in classic literature, this book has been written a little poetically. Great if you wish to improve your English grammar and composition.
To my knowledge, The Hobbit was originally written and published in 1937. The fact that The Hobbit remains immensely popular with the public shows that this book is really worth the read. Just find a comfortable place, sit down and embrace the fantasy and exhilaration while going through this book.
A REVIEW OF THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON
BY CHRISTINA ONG, LOWER CPE
Not sure if any of you read the second book of the Twilight series, New Moon which is an American romantic fantasy fiction novel written by Stephenie Meyer in year 2006. I did not know about this book until I saw the movie that was released in 2009. Apparently, the movie was based on the novel and most people prefer to read the book as they claimed that the book is a lot more detailed than the movie itself.
I personally think this book will attract both male and female readers because the story is a little more deep than it seems, and the romance between the characters is really heart-warming but it is also intense in a way that it make the readers wonder what will happen next. What’s special about this book is that it is different from the other vampire-wolf stories. The characters were described as handsome, charming, pale and beautiful, which is the opposite of a typical vampire-werewolf story. It even has a love triangle among a vampire, a wolf and a mortal.
This book is highly known by lots of people and it has sold more than 5.3 million copies and has also peaked at number 1 on both New York Times Best Seller list and USA Today’s Top 150 Bestseller. Therefore, if any of you have no idea about this book, I highly recommend you check it out. I bet you won’t regret it!
