English Lessons or Internet Distractions? The Truth About Social Media Learning

English Lessons or Internet Distractions? The Truth About Social Media Learning

In the age of TikTok and Instagram Reels, learning English online feels more convenient than ever. A quick scroll shows bite-sized grammar tips, trendy vocabulary, and native speakers chatting away like it’s effortless. It’s engaging, accessible, and deceptively educational — or so it seems.

While social media can offer useful exposure to natural language, relying on it entirely is problematic. Much of the content lacks accuracy and context. After all, not every “English coach” online is qualified — and absorbing incorrect usage can lead to fossilised errors that are hard to unlearn. Moreover, passive scrolling provides the illusion of progress, without genuine practice or feedback.

That’s why structured learning remains indispensable. A well-designed English programme, like the ones we offer at our language centre, ensures that learners build a strong foundation — with clear explanations, personalised feedback, and meaningful progress. Social media can certainly complement your learning, but it shouldn’t replace guided instruction.

Ultimately, the key is balance. Use social media to reinforce your skills, but trust qualified teachers to consolidate your understanding. After all, true fluency isn’t just about knowing the words — it’s about knowing how to use them correctly and confidently.

Words to learn

Deceptively in a way that gives a false impression, especially by making something seem easier, smaller, or better than it really is.

Fossilised errors – language mistakes that have become fixed habits and are difficult to correct.

Indispensable something so important or useful that you cannot do without it.

Complement to improve something by adding to it in a way that enhances the overall effect.

Consolidate to make something (like learning or power) more certain or stronger.

At ILTI, we encourage our learners to polish their language skills via real-life situations. We do not practise the chalk and talk approach – we learn and have fun at the same time. Join us today by calling / WhatsApp 010-395 3067 or email: info@ilti.edu.my.
