1. Posture

Have you ever heard of the saying “fake it till you make it?” This concept applies to your posture, as it has the power to craft an illusion of confidence, even if you are not feeling it on the inside. Body language is a massive giveaway to your emotions and thoughts. Positive body language, such as standing tall, maintaining eye contact, and using open gestures, can portray self-assurance to others. These nonverbal cues not only shape how others perceive you but can also influence your own mindset. With ample practice, your posture determines genuine confidence as your body and mind align.  

A good posture comprises standing or sitting upright with your shoulders relaxed but not slumped. Your ears should align with your shoulders, and your chin should be level, avoiding tilting forward or backward. Keep your chest open and your abdomen gently pulled in to support the spine. When standing, your feet should be hip-width apart, with your weight evenly distributed across both feet. In a seated position, your feet should be flat on the floor, and your knees should be at a 90-degree angle. This posture not only promotes physical health but also conveys confidence and attentiveness.

Be mindful of your posture because it forms the first impression others have of you. 

2. The TWO ways to negotiate

Effective communication is prevalent where people rely on one another in every aspect of life. This comes down to habitual negotiation in an attempt to form a ground of understanding and adapting to others’ needs to create mutual benefit. Hence, it is essential to grasp the ONLY TWO keys to an effective negotiation, which are emotional negotiation and rational negotiation.

Emotional negotiation relies on the emotional appeal and resonance between the parties involved. In this approach, individuals tap into feelings, empathy, and psychological triggers to influence conversations. It fosters a shared sense of trust, understanding, and rapport in finding common ground based on shared values or experiences. This type of negotiation can be especially helpful in situations where cooperation and long-term partnerships are prioritised over immediate, rational outcomes. 

On the other hand, rational negotiation stems from logic, facts, and objective factors. It involves analysing the situation, assessing the variables, and making informed decisions based on practicality. In this scenario, parties focus on the details—costs, benefits, risks, and other variables—to arrive at a solution that is most efficiently favourable to both parties. This method is often preferred in technical or formal settings where clear terms and measurable outcomes are fundamental.

The key to effective negotiation lies in knowing when to use each approach. Recognise the type of person you are negotiating with and whether they respond better to emotional appeals, while others may prefer a more logical, objective approach to achieve the best possible result. 

3. Use “I believe” instead of “I think”

Delivering your point across must exude confidence to gain respect and attention from your audience. Using phrases like “I believe” instead of “I think” is a form of effective speech that conveys a stronger sense of conviction, signalling that you are certain about your view. By asserting confidence, you not only enhance credibility to your opinion but also create a space where ideas are taken seriously. 

“I believe” derives a sense of certainty, illustrating your firm stance on the topic. It portrays the solidity of your opinion, which invites others to consider your viewpoint more seriously. On the other hand, “I think” can come across as tentative, implying you are not entirely sure about your stance.

Nostalgia in December

The warmth of nostalgia surrounding December is an undeniable tug at our souls, regardless of age and race. This subconscious emotion seeps into our very being, evoking a heartfelt reminiscence that transports us back to a time of pure joyfulness—granted by a month-long holiday that centres around Christmas, free from the chaos that fills the rest of the year.

How long has it been, dear reader, since you have had all the weight completely lifted off your shoulders? Our December school holidays have always felt like an embrace after conquering obstacles throughout the year, and there is something so safe about that feeling in December that we helplessly channel as we move forward in life, even if we grow into more responsibilities. We collectively become roasting chestnuts, steady and warm as though time ticked slower. We mould into a soothing melody absorbing love, family, and tradition, no matter how much time passes.

The raindrops racing on the window pane create a festive backdrop that coats the air with nostalgia. Everybody sips a familiar and comforting warmth from their hot coffee or sweet Milo in this gentle monsoon season. Everybody reverts to friendly conversations recapping the tumultuous year because when we meet, our pages are coloured and we each have a story to tell.

Time is such a fickle thing, yet the seconds melting into the year-end like honey pause the world for a breath. We have come this far, and that is such a beautiful, powerful miracle.

Gathered with people from other walks of life, December presents a brief unity for when we align in time, like hands on the clock going in circles back to their places. Interestingly, the “Home Alone” sequel, playing in 1080p quality on our screens but contrastingly preserving the 1990s aesthetic, observes the timeless dynamics of the human race settling in an instance of simplicity for people from one to 92.

The World of FOMO: Why We’re All Social Media Addicts

Do you ever feel a twinge of anxiety scrolling through picture-perfect vacations or epic hangouts on social media? That’s FOMO, or the Fear of Missing Out, casting its spell.  

In a world where everyone’s highlight reel is just a swipe away, it’s easy to feel like you’re falling behind. Beyond the scroll, however, is a more profound effect on mental health and self-worth so let’s dive right into that! 

In today’s world, FOMO isn’t just a buzzword, it’s practically a way of life. Everyone seems to be doing something exciting or achieving milestones on Instagram, but here we are, debating whether to start a new series or rewatch Friends for the 15th time. 

Social media updates change each scroll into a reminder of what we’re not doing. This anxiety can lead to compulsive scrolling or checking updates, disrupting daily activities and mental peace. 

The worst part? Over time, it breeds a sense of inadequacy, where we begin measuring our lives against the curated highlights of others. Suddenly, our accomplishments seem small, and we’re left with a question in mind—when will our main character moment manifest? 

FOMO has a sneaky way of turning self-esteem into a punching bag. Your pamper night in feels like a bad life choice when your feed is flooded with influencers crossing out countries on their travel list or friends rocking the front row at a concert. 

However, what we often fail to remember is that social media is like a movie, only the best bits make the cut. But those carefully curated highlights can set absurd standards. It’s a recipe for a self-esteem spiral, clawing at your heart from the thought of yourself being insignificant.

With their charm being the blend of the nostalgia of radio with the convenience of modern tech, podcasts are blazing through the Malaysian entertainment scene and taking the spot in the hearts of Malaysians as their favourite pastime.

Stuck in traffic on the Federal Highway? Prepping dinner in the kitchen? Winding down after a long day? Well, there’s always a good podcast out there ready to keep you company! 

Some may question: why are podcasts making waves in Malaysia? First off, they’re remarkably versatile. Are you a true-crime junkie? Check out Buletin Awani: Jenayah. Tread Carefully: Surviving the Flood

Did you know that just 60 cm of water is enough to make a car float, sweeping it away with surprising ease? Even more alarming, only 15 cm of fast-flowing water can knock you off your feet, making it nearly impossible to regain balance. These figures reveal just how precarious floodwaters can be, when even shallow water has the power to uproot heavy vehicles or put anyone nearby at serious risk.  

We’re reminded of the harrowing incident in Italy last June, where three friends were seen to share a final embrace moments before they were swept away by a flash flood – a stark reminder of how unpredictable and devastating floodwaters can be. Hence, early evacuation is always the key to avoiding any incidents. 

If you find yourself stuck in rising water, try not to panic. Move to the highest possible point as quickly as you can. It is most recommended not to walk, swim or drive through floodwater. However, if you must step into floodwater, make sure it’s not moving as it is tough to gauge depth, and one wrong step can have you swept away!  

A trusty stick is your best friend here, helping you test the depth and ground ahead. If you’re driving to evacuate and get stalled, it is wise to abandon the vehicle and move on foot as quickly as possible. Do not drive into flooded roadways or around a barricade and stay off the bridges. Remember, when in doubt, turn around and don’t drown!  

If you’re stuck inside a building and the water’s creeping up, your first move is to get to higher ground! Ready.gov suggests heading to the highest level of the building and only hitting the roof if you absolutely have to. Once you’re there, make sure to send that SOS signal!  

Steer clear of basements or any room where water’s high enough to submerge electrical outlets or cords. If you spot sparks or hear any buzzing, crackling, or popping noises, it’s high time to make a speedy exit! And whatever you do, remember that water and electricity don’t mix so don’t test the water, literally!

Malaysia is no stranger to its yearly gully-washer of a visitor. We’re talking about the monsoon season and torrential downpour between October and March, usually posing the risk of flooding in both East and West Malaysia.  

Despite it being a common occurrence to some Malaysians, the same cannot be said for areas that were once considered safe from such natural disasters. This is due to the incapacitating climate change and rising urbanisation, which has led to flooding even at unlikely areas. This has been proven as more and more cities find themselves underwater in recent times.

Ready, Set, Prep! Get Flood-Ready 

Prevention is always better than rescue. That said, you should always know your risks! Keep one eye on the sky and the other on your phone. Check flood warnings from local authorities and stay updated with weather forecasts by the Malaysian Meteorological Department, especially when it feels like you’re getting drenched by the rain a little too often for your liking.

Want to take precautions up a notch? Download live weather apps like MyCuaca, Clime, or Windy for real-time alerts, because who doesn’t love a timely weather heads-up? 

An emergency, flood-ready kit can be a lifesaver in more ways than you can imagine! What should be on our checklist, you may ask? A physical copy of emergency contacts (just in case your phone battery goes MIA), power bank and charger to stay connected, and a battery-operated torchlight and radio. Psst, don’t forget to stock up on extra batteries for backup power!

Other than that, you don’t want to skip your essential meds, a first aid kit, and enough bottled water (4L per person, per day) along with canned goods to keep you fueled for three days minimum. Store important documents (think birth certificates, insurance, passports!) in a waterproof bag, and grab spare keys for your home and car. Got kids or pets? Pack their essentials too, and you’ll thank yourself later! 

To make your flood-preparedness game more solid, prepare for the unforeseen with a family evacuation plan! Start by picking a shelter spot and mapping out an escape route that everyone knows by heart. Don’t forget your furry friends (or scaly friends, if you’re into that…) they need a safety plan too!

Set up a way to stay connected if you’re split up from your family, stash important documents somewhere secure, and move valuables to higher ground to keep them safe and dry. With these steps in place, you’ll be ready to face any storm that comes your way!
